In keeping with its mission to serve as a Center of Learning that promotes spiritual, artistic, and intellectual development, Desert Rose Bahá’í Institute invites you to participate in a series of Public Forums that will focus on issues of interest to people of all ages and backgrounds. Music and discussion are included with each presentation. These forums are offered as a public service, without charge. All are welcome.
World In Transition Public Forums
June 15: “Co-Creating Peace On Earth and Peace In Space” Terri Mansfield Terri Mansfield is the Executive Director and Co-founder of the Arizona Department of Peace (AZDOP) Campaign, an inclusive, proactive, nonpartisan grassroots educational movement, active in all 50 states, which connects individuals and groups to the concept of a United States Department of Peace and Nonviolence (DOP), and empowers citizens to help create a culture of peace. The mandate is two-fold: to focus on ways to de-escalate violence in America: violence in homes, in schools, in workplaces, in prisons, in the media, in the environment; and to focus on ways to use mediation and conflict resolution skills in deflecting international areas of conflict. * Moderator for the series is Lisa Janti, Director of the Desert Rose Center for Education.
January 27: “The Power of Intention” William and Nancy Barnes Nancy and William Barnes, executive director of the Desert Rose Bahá’í Institute, have given this extraordinary presentation in many parts of the U.S. as well as internationally. It is based on the most current scientific research dealing with the actualization of human potential and offers a unique and inspiring experience. (A follow-up workshop, “The Power of Intention - Creating (Y)our Destiny” will be held February 2-3.)
February 24: “A Fresh Look at Global Integration” Teresa May Teresa May, born in Poland, has been teaching philosophy since 1982, in France, Italy and Madagascar, and more recently in the United States. Currently, she is teaching courses in Philosophy, World Religions, and Medical and Bioethics at South Mountain Community College. From both her academic background and extensive traveling, Teresa recognizes and teaches the vital importance of the religious dimension in the present world environment.
March 30: “Youth and Drugs” Shireen Janti, Wallace Reid, and Robert Dix Shireen and Wallace are addiction recovery specialists based in Los Angeles. Shireen is a member of the management team at the GRAMMY Awards MusiCares Addiction Recovery Program, a leading force in the effort to identify, raise awareness of and address the problems of addiction in the music industry. Wallace is the Detox Admissions Coordinator at Cri-Help, Inc., which has specialized in effective drug and alcohol treatment in Southern California since 1971, utilizing a whole-life approach to physical, psychological and spiritual healing. Robert Dix is a film actor and one of the founders of the “Bahá’ís in Recovery Fellowship” (BIRF). All three have dramatic personal histories of struggles with and successful recovery from drugs and alcohol. (They will conduct an all day workshop on Saturday, March 29.)
April 13: “Food, Faith, Science and Spirituality” Robert T. Phillips Robert Phillips is Executive Director of St. Andrew’s Children’s Clinic (SACC) in Nogales, Arizona, the oldest cross border health program in the US (1973). The Clinic provides multi-specialty medical, diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitation and referral care to impoverished and disabled children from Mexico. Currently the Clinic treats over 2,000 children a year. This forum envisions a new healthcare system for the world. (A workshop for the medical care community will be held on Saturday, April 12.)
May 4: “Spiritual Health in a Frantic World” Elena Mustakova Posardt Elena Mustakova Posard, Ed.D., LPC, Bulgarian educator and psychotherapist, serves as Educational & Organizational Consultant for the Georgia Health Realization Counseling &Consulting Center. She has taught psychology and lectured on various subjects in Sofia, Bulgaria and the U.S., as well as in far flung places such as Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Her main interest is an educational model for the development of critical moral consciousness. (She will conduct a workshop for parents and educators, “The role of faith in the evolving of critical consciousness” on Saturday, May 3.)
World In Transition Workshops 2008 February 2-3 A week-end workshop on “The Power of Intention - Creating (Y)our Destiny” will be presented by William and Nancy Barnes. This workshop has been hailed as a “life altering” experience, opening us up to wondrous new possibilities for accomplishment and self-realization by applying the latest scientific findings and meditation techniques.
March 29 An all day Saturday workshop on “Youth and Drugs” will be presented by Shireen Janti and Wallace Reid. This is a special opportunity to hear from two experts in the field on how to best prevent, identify, and treat drug and alcohol addiction in young people. A “must” for educators, parents, and students.
April 12 This all day Saturday workshop, directed primarily at the medical profession, will address the critical issues of “Food, Faith, Science and Spirituality: The Need for a New Health Care System for the World,” presented by Robert T. Phillips, who will share his insights and experiences with our own version of “Doctors Without Borders.” May 3 This Saturday workshop, presented by Elena Mustakova Posardt, is directed towards educators and parents alike. It offers a provocative new view of education and the acquisition of “Critical Consciousness and Spiritual Health in a Frantic World”.
*Introductory price for the one day workshops is $50 for adults; $35 for students and seniors. The two day workshop is $75 for adults and $50 for students and seniors. This includes lunch and other light refreshments. There is no charge for the Sunday afternoon World In Transition public forums.
